About the event
Painting plexiglass is a very interesting and dramatic technique that can include the use of many different materials and techniques.
The Plexiglass is painted on the back side that has a matte or frosted finish so the paint will react and adhere to the surface. While creating you have to think in reverse as to how to layer different colors or materials. A very wet technique will allow many translucent levels to be applied and built up to create a rich deep combination of colors. Colored pencils are also a good medium to combine, allowing very detailed sketching and shading if desired.
Personal photos or decorative papers can also be collaged on to the plexiglass as another element in the composition.
Metal leafing such as gold leaf, silver or copper leaf also can add a very rich high light or glimmer to the finished art. Scratching through paint layers and then using metal leafing as the final layer can allow very fine detailed line work to come through in the brightness of the metal leaf.
When the art is finished you have a wonderful smooth glossy finished surface on the face that enriches the overall look of the art created on the back side.
This is a very fun and surprising medium that produces an original piece of art that can be displayed in a wide variety of ways.
∙ Mounted directly to the wall with standoffs
∙ Mounted to a panel (finished wood, metal, etc.)
∙ Framed
∙ Or many other creative options
These are a very small sample of paintings on plexiglass and a few ways to display and assemble. The exciting thing about painting plexiglass is that it is always a surprise what happens in the process and the numerous ways to display the finished art. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!
